Roomie is a community for finding roommates and discovering housing. These guidelines keep it safe, respectful, and trustworthy for everyone, and they apply whenever you use Roomie.
These guidelines are part of our Terms of Service; accepting the Terms covers these guidelines and our Privacy Policy in a single agreement, so breaking these guidelines is a breach of the Terms. We may update these guidelines from time to time — significant changes will ask for your acceptance again in the app.
The idea is simple: treat other members with respect, be honest, and help keep people safe.
The rules
These are the things that are not allowed on Roomie:
- Spam and unsolicited promotions. Don’t send repetitive or mass messages, or promote products, services, or links that have nothing to do with finding a roommate or housing.
- Indecent or hateful content. Don’t post or share content that is sexually explicit, indecent, offensive, hateful, or discriminatory — in your profile, your listings, your messages, or your photos.
- Harassment. Don’t target another member with hostile or unwanted behavior, and don’t keep contacting someone who has asked you to stop or has blocked you.
- Scams and fraud. Don’t deceive anyone for money, and don’t try to obtain payment, deposits, or someone’s personal or financial information under false pretenses.
- Threats and unsafe behavior. Don’t threaten or harm anyone, and don’t engage in violence, predatory behavior, stalking, coercion, extortion, or doxxing (sharing someone’s private information to harm them).
Reviews
You can review members you’ve actually connected with — you can’t review a stranger. Reviews are named (shown with your name) and include category ratings, a “would live again” indicator, and a short comment.
To keep them fair, reviews are double-blind: your review and the other person’s stay hidden until you both submit, or until a 14-day window passes — then they appear together, and pending reviews are never shown on a profile. You can edit your review until it’s revealed; after that, it’s locked. A member’s overall rating is shown only once at least three reviews have been revealed.
Keep reviews honest, respectful, and lawful — no abuse, harassment, or false claims. You can report a review, and we remove reviews that break these guidelines.
Sharing contact details
Keep conversations on Roomie until you’re both ready to share contact details. Roomie has a mutual contact exchange: one member requests to share, and when the other agrees, both phone numbers and emails are revealed at the same time.
Before that mutual agreement, messages that contain phone numbers, emails, or links to other messaging or social apps may be blocked, with a nudge to use the contact exchange instead. Don’t pressure anyone to move off Roomie before you’ve both agreed, and respect it if someone declines — no means no.
If the rules are broken
If you break these guidelines, we may take action depending on how serious the issue is. That can mean a warning, a temporary suspension, or permanent removal from Roomie.
The most serious violations — fraud, threats to someone’s safety, and anything involving a minor — lead to immediate, permanent removal, without a warning first.
How to report
If you see something that breaks these guidelines, please tell us. You can:
- use the in-app report tool to flag a profile, message, listing, or piece of content; or
- email us at support@roomie.cc.
Every report is reviewed by a person — we don’t act on the number of reports alone. The identity of anyone who makes a report is kept confidential.
Appeals
If we take action on your account, we will tell you the category of the violation and a general reason, and you can appeal. Appeals are genuinely reviewed, and if we got a decision wrong, we will put it right. Depending on the situation, you may be able to appeal directly in the app, or by contacting us at support@roomie.cc.
Safety and minors
Roomie is for adults only — you must be 18 or over to use it. We have zero tolerance for any content or conduct that sexualizes, exploits, or endangers a minor, and we report such cases to the authorities as required by law.
For our full child-safety standards and how to report a concern, please see our Child Safety page.
